Weston-super-Mare: THOUSANDS of native trees and shrubs have been planted by The Mead Group, in Weston-super-Mare as part of their environmental sustainability initiative.
Nearly two thousand meters of hedgerow have been planted in the fields surrounding Puxton Park Estate and Mead Fields. Planting hedgerows creates new habitats for local wildlife and strengthens Somerset’s treescapes in the face of ash dieback disease.
The trees were planted on a sunny Spring day by numerous members of The Mead Group Team.
Group Managing Director, Alistair Mead, says: “It’s been wonderful getting our team involved in this project. The act of planting trees truly is something far more meaningful and profound than just putting a tree in the ground - it’s an investment in our future and the future of North Somerset’s wildlife.
“Sustainability is core to our business at The Mead Group as we work towards net zero carbon ambitions. Innovative solutions like our living green roof, solar panels and sustainable farming practices, as well as our thousands of new trees and shrubs are making a huge impact on the carbon footprint in the UK as we work towards our ambitious sustainability goals.”
In addition to the thousands of trees already existing on our sites, these 6,724 new trees and shrubs are just the start of our commitment to protect and support Somerset’s environment, community, economy and future.”
Climate change is a known issue and the UK government has a target to become ‘carbon neutral’ by 2030.
According to the Woodland Trust, the best weapon against the climate emergency is trees. Woodland and forests absorb atmospheric carbon and store for centuries through photosynthesis. With just 13% of the UK’s land area is covered in trees, compared with the EU average of 37%
The Mead Group are continually committed to sustainability and improving our environmental management and carbon footprint.
